Artwork

The Artist

We have commissioned local artist (and runner!) Sara Starr to do the artwork for our shirts and medals.  The image on this page is the 2018 artwork that will be on all of our shirts and our finisher's medals.  Please visit (and Like!) her Facebook page here

Artist's Statement

The art symbolizes several things I love about Humboldt Bay. Our beautiful Bay is surrounded by the unique Victorian architecture of Eureka, perhaps best exemplified by the Carson Mansion, one of the most photographed buildings in America; towering redwood forests; sparkling water; and wildflowers along the highway. I often see curious seals periscoping in the water when I’ve run along the Mad River at low tide or lunched at Woodley Island.

I have run or biked many parts of this marathon route, including the windy road from Sunnybrae to Freshwater, the redwood forest paths and hills of Arcata Community Forest, the Samoa Bridge, and the streets of Old Town Eureka.

A runner for 30+ years, I ran a few half-marathons years ago when I worked for Runner’s World magazine. I am honored to be a part of this first-ever event and look forward to it becoming an established part of a Humboldt County summer!
